Finding a Glass Hummingbird Feeder to Delight Your Senses

glass hummingbird feederNo doubt you have seen a glass hummingbird feeder either hanging in someone’s yard or in a display at your local home and garden center. Many times these will have either red glass or big red plastic “flowers” on them to attract hummingbirds. Indeed it is a good thing to have red on your glass hummingbird feeder as it will attract the little flying jewels.

However, that is not the full extent of the available types of glass hummingbird feeders. Just have a look at blown glass feeders and you will see the extent of the art that you can place in your yard. For instance, there is a feeder that looks like an antique glass antique look glass hummingbird feederbottle of some kind has been used as the base of a feeder to attract hummingbirds.  It isn’t really an antique but sure looks pretty and does look like an antique glass bottle.

You can find a glass hummingbird feeder in just about any kind of look you would like. I have seen etched glass, hand-painted, and hand blown 100% recycled glass hummingbird feeders. Some come in tinted glass wrapped in a metal such as copper that includes pieces cut in the shapes of leaves and flowers.

No matter what kind of glass hummingbird feeder you want, you will find one that will meet your taste. Even if you didn’t care if you attracted hummingbirds to your yard (now who would NOT be interested in hummingbirds), these feeders make great pieces of yard art and create sparkle in your landscaping.

Using Solar Water Fountains to Attract Wild Birds

Attracting wild birds to our homes is one reason we look for information on sites like this one. Other articles can be found here about different kinds of bird feeders and other items to help us in that effort. One very cool kind of item we can add to our landscaping to attract more birds are solar water fountains.

solar water fountainsJust like all animals birds not only need food sources and shelter, they need water as well. They use water much like we do. Not only for drinking but also for bathing. When they bathe in water it helps remove dust, parasites, loose feathers and anything else that needs removing. Bathing in water also helps keep birds cool. All of this explains why there are so many bird feathers in every tub or livestock waterer on my place. They even do this in winter which my dirty tubs certainly attest to.

But why choose solar water fountains? Solar water fountains will not only provide a source of water for wild birds, but they will also look beautiful in your landscaping. The fact that the pump is solar powered means you can add the fountain anywhere in your yard.solar water fountains

What this flexibility means is that you can not only place the solar water fountains in such a manner that you can watch birds using them through your home’s windows, it also means you can place them near trees and shrubs. Placing them near trees and shrubs allows the water soaked bird to quickly seek shelter till it can dry off if it doesn’t want to hang out on your lovely fountain until that is done.

In fact, if you want to you can place the fountain itself in the shade as long as the wiring to the solar panel that provides the electricity for the pump is long enough to stretch and leave the panel in the sun. By placing the fountain itself in the shade you will lessen the evaporation of water. Being closer to the trees and shrubs means the wild birds can make a fast get away to safety should a dog or cat come around.

And while there are many beautiful solar water fountains available for purchase, a real do-it-yourself fan can also purchase a pump and make his own solar powered fountain. Using one such as shown in the picture below is a good way to have your own home built solar water fountain.
