Why Should You Consider a Heated Bird Bath?

If you love wild birds and like attracting them to your home, you have no doubt included some bird feeders in your yard. You may even have gone so far as to add a bird bath. But do you realize the importance of a heated bird bath?

Let’s get a little basic here. Birds are living things and like the rest of us, they need water to survive just like food. While many people know the importance of continuing to feed birds in winter, they don’t think through the need for water as well.

If you have only been putting out wild bird seed in feeders in the summer, are you thinking that they can easily find water elsewhere? After all, who wants to mess with cleaning out feathers, dirt and other garbage that can make a mess in a bird bath.

And that is one thing that a bird bath does allow birds to do – clean themselves. Not only do they need water to drink but, just like us, they need water to get clean. They need to get rid of dirt, parasites, loose feathers, etc.

But in winter, that other water source you have been thinking the wild birds use, may be frozen. In the same way a regular bird bath will freeze in winter. So what do you do if you want to provide a good reason for birds to come to your yard? Get a heated bird bath, of course.

A heated bird bath will be a big draw for birds in your area in the winter. Not only will it provide an unfrozen source of water to drink, they will still be able to get their daily baths.

As a person with livestock, I know that a heated bird bath is a very good thing for wild birds. Overnight, the tubs of water will freeze making it impossible for my livestock to get to the water. Any source of uncovered or unheated water around will freeze.

This means every morning I, or my kids, have to knock out the ice and refill the tubs in all the pens. When I do this, the birds just about line up waiting for me to get out of the way so they can get at the water.

This is why having a source of heated water such as a heated bird bath provides is so important. Those wild birds you love seeing still need a source of water. If it’s heated a bit, it also means the birds will not have to use as much of their own body energy on the water.

True, a heated bird bath for the most part just keeps the water above freezing. However that is sure better than drinking water that is slowly turning to ice.

So if you want to attract wild birds to your home, consider getting a heated bird bath. With a heated bird bath in addition to your bird feeder, you really provide “one stop shopping” for all the neighborhood birds and attract lots more to your yard.

Using Solar Water Fountains to Attract Wild Birds

Attracting wild birds to our homes is one reason we look for information on sites like this one. Other articles can be found here about different kinds of bird feeders and other items to help us in that effort. One very cool kind of item we can add to our landscaping to attract more birds are solar water fountains.

Just like all animals birds not only need food sources and shelter, they need water as well. They use water much like we do. Not only for drinking but also for bathing. When they bathe in water it helps remove dust, parasites, loose feathers and anything else that needs removing. Bathing in water also helps keep birds cool. All of this explains why there are so many bird feathers in every tub or livestock waterer on my place. They even do this in winter which my dirty tubs certainly attest to.

But why choose solar water fountains? Solar water fountains will not only provide a source of water for wild birds, but they will also look beautiful in your landscaping. The fact that the pump is solar powered means you can add the fountain anywhere in your yard.

What this flexibility means is that you can not only place the solar water fountains in such a manner that you can watch birds using them through your home’s windows, it also means you can place them near trees and shrubs. Placing them near trees and shrubs allows the water soaked bird to quickly seek shelter till it can dry off if it doesn’t want to hang out on your lovely fountain until that is done.

In fact, if you want to you can place the fountain itself in the shade as long as the wiring to the solar panel that provides the electricity for the pump is long enough to stretch and leave the panel in the sun. By placing the fountain itself in the shade you will lessen the evaporation of water. Being closer to the trees and shrubs means the wild birds can make a fast get away to safety should a dog or cat come around.

And while there are many beautiful solar water fountains available for purchase, a real do-it-yourself fan can also purchase a pump and make his own solar powered fountain. Using one such as shown in the picture below is a good way to have your own home built solar water fountain.

No doubt you have seen a glass hummingbird feeder either hanging in someone’s yard or in a display at your local home and garden center. Many times these will have either red glass or big red plastic “flowers” on them to attract hummingbirds. Indeed it is a good thing to have red on your glass hummingbird feeder as it will attract the little flying jewels.

However, that is not the full extent of the available types of glass hummingbird feeders. Just have a look at blown glass feeders and you will see the extent of the art that you can place in your yard. For instance, there is a feeder that looks like an antique glass bottle of some kind has been used as the base of a feeder to attract hummingbirds. It isn’t really an antique but sure looks pretty and does look like an antique glass bottle.

You can find a glass hummingbird feeder in just about any kind of look you would like. I have seen etched glass, hand-painted, and hand blown 100% recycled glass hummingbird feeders. Some come in tinted glass wrapped in a metal such as copper that includes pieces cut in the shapes of leaves and flowers.

No matter what kind of glass hummingbird feeder you want, you will find one that will meet your taste. Even if you didn’t care if you attracted hummingbirds to your yard (now who would NOT be interested in hummingbirds), these feeders make great pieces of yard art and create sparkle in your landscaping.

Why Use a Bird Feeder Pole?

The wild bird enthusiast who wants to attract wild birds to his home and yard may want to consider the bird feeder pole an essential part of his equipment. Even a homeowner who just wants to be able to watch birds from his window should look into having a bird feeder pole or six in his arsenal.

Now why do I say this? If you are lucky enough to have trees in your yard, you could just hand a bird feeder from it, right? Yes, this is true. But what if you don’t have trees that are close enough to make bird watching easy from your living room window.

In my case and that of many people who live out west, there just aren’t trees in the yard to hand anything in. I do have trees but they are a couple hundred feet and more away and hanging anything in them to attract feeding birds would be difficult. Besides, they are on the wrong side of the house as well. Those of us who live on the plains and in the desert do not always have this option even if most towns and many homeowners have planted trees.

But there is another reason for not hanging your bird feeder from a tree and that is a cute little four legged varmint with a fluffy tail who would love to get its paws on all that wild bird seed of whatever type you set out. Makes it easier to stock up. That little varmint would be your local squirrel and all his buddies that live in those trees.

And don’t forget the cat whether yours or the neighbors. Cats love to climb and the branch that your bird feeder hangs from would make a great place to lay an ambush. Birds have it tough enough with cats and dogs around. Don’t provide them with a hunting spot that they can easily access.

Likewise attaching a bird feeder, even a platform feeder, to your deck railing provides the same kind of temptation even if it does make a great place to see the birds eating and carrying on their shenanigans.

However, if you use a bird feeder pole, you can place it where it’s easy to see from any window you desire. By placing the pole and the attached feeder far enough away from trees you won’t have to worry squirrels especially if you use an squirrel baffle making it a squirrel proof bird feeder. Just remember squirrels can jump several feet.

And the squirrel baffle will need to be placed high enough up the pole so that it doesn’t actually become a step up allowing the squirrel access to your wild bird seed.

Bird Feeder Pole Types

Now bird feeder poles come in a few different types. Which kind you want to use will depend upon a few different things. Among these will be the type of bird feeder(s) it will support and this will depend upon which types of birds you want to attract. There is also the aesthetic appeal in the home’s landscaping and just which kind of poles
you like to look at.

You will have crossed arms feeder poles, shepherd crook’s poles, and straight bird feeder poles from which to choose.

Now with the crossed arms you can usually hand four feeders as you will have four points at the end of the crossed arms. Instead of wild bird seed feeders you might want to add a suet bird feeders, a small solar powered bird bath or something else from your collection including just a pretty piece of lawn art. Since you have four points it’s up to you.

Likewise, with a shepherd’s crook type you will have anywhere from one to six crooks to hang something from including a pot of flowers I suppose. Of course you should be sure that the pole will support the weight of all the things you may hang from the hooks. One I looked at was capable of holding 120 pounds. When you consider you might hang a seed feeder, a bird house, a hummingbird feeder and in winter a suet bird feeder. I even saw a couple with built in squirrel baffles and rings where you could add a bird bath.

Now with a straight bird feeder pole you will most likely need some type of mounting hardware. But once you have your hardware in place you will be able to add a platform feeder or even a bird house if you wish.

Get Your Own Bird Feeder Pole

Whatever type of bird feeder pole you select it will no doubt add much beauty to your home’s landscaping. Just think of the fun you will have watching the birds and letting your children learn more about nature and wild birds.

There are lots of places online where you can search through the available types of bird feeder poles. This site is one such place and we hope you will be able to find the one that will look great in your yard and provide all that bird watching fun.

Advantages of Large Bird Feeders – More Birds with a Large Bird Feeder?

In the spring many thoughts turn to the outdoors. At this time of the year, we’re ready to get in the garden and do a little landscaping. For the bird lover, it may also be the time to think about adding new bird feeders. For some, this will include adding a large bird feeder or two.

One of the advantages of a large bird feeder is very apparent. It holds more wild bird mixed seed. This will mean not having to fill it as often as bird feeders which don’t hold as much seed. If you have your large bird feeder mounted on a bird feeder pole and it is some ways off the ground, this will mean not having to haul out the ladder as often. As a woman, that is something I appreciate.

However, there is a bad side to this. When you do finally have to fill up the feeder, you will be lugging a bigger bag or pail up that ladder with you. As large bird feeders run in the 20 to 25 pound holding capacity, you can see what I mean. First there is lugging out the ladder to reach the feeder to pour in the wild bird seed and then there is the hauling the bird seed up that ladder to pour it in.

Even with the larger amount of seed that you will have to handle you will find that this larger capacity does give you another benefit beyond just how much it will hold. A large bird feeder also means more space for more birds. And what bird lover doesn’t like to see more birds in his or her backyard.

But putting that large bird feeder into your backyard will require some thought to landscaping. It’s not like it is a window bird feeder that you know will be right at the house. It will have to placed correctly so that you can see it from the house but given its size it will need to play nice with the other aspects of your landscaping such as children’s play areas.

When considering their placement in the landscaping perhaps it’s best to think of your large bird feeder as a lawn ornament. This is where the style of your feeder will come into play as well. Though many of the larger feeders are the cedar barn style you will have some that come in other amazing shapes and materials such as copper. These other styles will not hold as much as the large barn style even if they are called large bird feeders.

World’s Record Large Bird Feeder

What article would be complete about a large bird feeder without some notion about which one holds the Guinness World Record? The folks at Ridge Bird Feeders have that story of how it took them about a year to achieve that record. Feel free to check out their pictures here.

Turns out their handcrafted cedar bird feeder hold 136 AND 1/4 pounds of bird seed. It is over 8 feet tall making it something you won’t find in just any backyard. Congratulations to Ridge Bird Feeders and their world record large bird feeder.
